
Another eight lives lost to violence last week, bringing our 2022 homicide total to 148 – this represents an increase of 155% relative to 2019, 97% relative to 2020, and 53% relative to 2021
- A 55% majority 2022 of homicides have occurred in either the 7th District (34%) or the 5th District (21%)
Shooting incidents are 92% higher relative to 2019, but remain 7% lower relative to 2021 – note that this does not reflect the number of shooting victims
- Again, most 2022 incidents are reported in either the 7th (30%) or 5th (20%) Districts
We are seeing smaller increases relative to 2021 in carjacking incidents (+6%), though we are still 191% higher relative to 2019
- The 7th District has the highest number of reported carjacking incidents, accounting for 27% of 2022 reported carjackings
- There is a somewhat even distribution across the 5th District (16%), 6th District (14%), and 1st District (14%), with only the 8th District reporting fewer than 10 in 2022 YTD
Overall, armed robbery is up 32% relative to 2021, 57% relative to 2020, and 22% relative to 2019. It is the only category in which we have seen a higher rate of increase relative to 2021 than to 2019.
- This is the most equally distributed type of violent crime across the 8 NOPD Districts.
- The 3rd and 7th Districts each account for 17% of armed robberies, the 1st District accounts for 15%, and the 5th and 8th Districts each account for 14% – crimes of opportunity!
