We have reached a grim milestone – less than 5 months into 2022 and we are already up to 104 homicides for the year.  Homicide is still showing the sharpest increase across the past 3 years – up 148% relative to 2019, 93% relative to 2020, and 46% relative to 2021

Shooting incidents, while still 113% higher than 2019, have slowed slightly – 2022 has seen 5% fewer shooting incidents relative to 2021. However, we are seeing an alarming number of mass shooting incidents, meaning the total number of 2022 shooting victims is far higher than the 166 reported incidents to date. Further, given the sharp rise in homicides, the reduction in nonfatal shootings may indicate that victims are less likely to survive gunshot injuries compared with 2021

Similarly, carjacking incidents remain 227% higher relative to 2019, but we have had only 3 reported carjacking incidents so far this month (+22% relative to 2021). Hopefully this decline will continue!

Armed robbery rates show the most stability over the last three years – we’ve seen a bit of an uptick in recent weeks as festival season continues, putting us 22% higher relative to 2021, 42% higher relative to 2020 (pandemic lockdown/no festivals), and 23% higher relative to 2019
