A note about homicides

While we cross-check our numbers against coroner records, major offense logs, media reports, and any other source available, homicide numbers are subject to change as investigations progress.  Homicides may be reclassified as “undetermined” if the coroner cannot definitively state whether the injury was self-inflicted, accidental, or intentional.  More commonly, deaths initially listed as “unclassified” are reclassified as “homicide” after autopsy. 

Homicide and Shooting

As of April 7, 2024: 

Homicide Victims: 50

  • Last week had 5 homicide victims, including a double homicide in the 6th District after which a suspect turned himself into police.
  • Homicide continues its decline and is -42% lower than 2023, -44% lower than 2022 and -14% lower than 2021.
  • To date, homicide in 2024 is +2% higher than 2020 and +35% higher than 2019.

Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 84

  • The 4 nonfatal shooting incidents last week bring the year-to-date totals -38% lower than 2023, -43% lower than 2022, -39% lower than 2021, and -10% lower than 2020.
  • To date in 2024, the only increase in nonfatal shooting is noted in comparison with 2019 (+33%).

Carjacking and Armed Robbery

Carjacking Incidents: 31

    • There were no reported carjacking incidents last week.
    • Carjacking in 2024 is lower than has been across the past 5 years:
      • Since 2019 -45%
      • Since 2020 -74%
      • Since 2021 -64%
      • Since 2022 -38%
      • Since 2023 -9%

 

Armed Robbery Incidents: 77

    • There were fewer armed robbery incidents year-to-date in 2024 compared to the past 5 years. 
      • The number of carjackings in 2024 is -36% to -53% lower than 2019-2023. 
    • Armed robbery was the most frequent major violent crime last week when there were 6 incidents. 
      • 4 of last week’s 6 incidents were in the 8th District, including 3 in the French Quarter.
