A note about homicides

While we cross-check our numbers against coroner records, major offense logs, media reports, and any other source available, homicide numbers are subject to change as investigations progress.  Homicides may be reclassified as “undetermined” if the coroner cannot definitively state whether the injury was self-inflicted, accidental, or intentional.  More commonly, deaths initially listed as “unclassified” are reclassified as “homicide” after autopsy.

As of April 23, 2023:

Homicide Victims: 86

Nine homicide victims in the past week, include 5 in a single day (April 20th).

Nonetheless, we are still 5% lower than in 2022, when we had seen 91 homicides at this time.

Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 141

There have been approximately 197 victims of nonfatal gunshot injuries in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.

Note: At the same time in 2022, there had been 150 shooting incidents and approximately 211 nonfatal shooting victims

Carjacking Incidents: 62

Carjacking incidents are down 47% relative to 2022 – this is the biggest drop we have seen in any violent crime category since 2022.

Should be noted that the considerable decrease in carjacking coincides with a large (157%) increase in auto theft.

.

Armed Robbery: 153

Reported armed robbery is down 8% relative to 2022.

Eleven armed robberies reported last week vs. 15 during the same week in 2022.

*Armed robbery continues to show a great deal of stability, across both weeks (Weeks 1-16) and years (2019-2023).

In 2022, there were 1,030 reported auto thefts as of April 23th.

There have been at least 2,640 reported auto thefts to date in 2023, an increase of 157% since 2022.

This is an average of 23 stolen cars per day
