A note about homicides

While we cross-check our numbers against coroner records, major offense logs, media reports, and any other source available, homicide numbers are subject to change as investigations progress.  Homicides may be reclassified as “undetermined” if the coroner cannot definitively state whether the injury was self-inflicted, accidental, or intentional.  More commonly, deaths initially listed as “unclassified” are reclassified as “homicide” after autopsy. 

Homicide and Shooting

As of October 15, 2023: 

Homicide Victims: 182

  • While there were no new homicide incidents last week, two victims died of prior injuries (from August and September 2023), bringing our total to 182.
  • Homicide total includes ten victims of vehicular homicide, four negligent, and approx. four pending justifiable consult. These will not be counted as “murders” by NOPD.
  • Homicide in 2023 is 18% lower than the same time in 2022.

Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 309

  • There have been approximately 412 victims of nonfatal gunshot incidents in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.
  • At the same time in 2022, there had been 370 shooting incidents and approximately 510 nonfatal shooting victims (an overall reduction of 22% in fatal/nonfatal shooting incidents and victims).

Carjacking and Armed Robbery

Carjacking Incidents: 123

    • Carjacking incidents are down 48% relative to 2022 – still the biggest decline we are seeing in any major violent crime category since 2022.
    • Continues to coincide with a substantial (91%) increase in auto theft (as of October 15, 2022, 3,022 auto thefts vs. 5,787 in 2023).

Armed Robbery Incidents: 298

    • Armed robbery is 32% lower than this time in 2022 and 12% lower than the same time in 2019, though we remain slightly to moderately above 2020-2021 rates (+7% and +2%, respectively).

Daily Auto Theft

 

 

In 2022, there were 3,022 reported auto thefts as of October 15th.. 

There have been at least 5,727 reported auto thefts to date in 2023, an increase of 91% since 2022. 

This is an average of 20 stolen cars per day, though we have slowly improved since earlier in the year, when the city was averaging 25 stolen cars per day.
