2023 First District Trends

The most alarming change we have seen in the 1st District is a consistent and substantial increase in the rate of both HOMICIDE (+100% vs, 2019; +500% vs. 2020; +200% vs. 2021; +33% vs. 2022)

AND

NONFATAL SHOOTING INCIDENTS  (+280% vs. 2020; +73% vs. 2021; +12% vs. 2022).
⇒Despite accounting for less than 9% of Orleans Parish total population, the 1st District accounted for 16% of Q1 homicides and 17% of Q1 Shootings in 2023.

CARJACKING followed a similar trend in the 1st District as most Districts, increasing between 2020-2021 and spiking in 2022.  Although this District has dropped 27% in carjacking incidents, it remains at twice the pre-pandemic carjacking rate.

ARMED ROBBERY has decreased somewhat (-9%) since 2022 Q1, but remains 67% above pre-pandemic rates.  Only the 7th District reported more armed robberies in Q1 2023 than the 1st District.

While small in both population and area, the 1st District was ranked in the top 3 districts in all categories of major violent crime as of Q1 2023
