A note about homicides
While we cross-check our numbers against coroner records, major offense logs, media reports, and any other source available, homicide numbers are subject to change as investigations progress. Homicides may be reclassified as “undetermined” if the coroner cannot definitively state whether the injury was self-inflicted, accidental, or intentional. More commonly, deaths initially listed as “unclassified” are reclassified as “homicide” after autopsy.
As of April 16, 2023:
Homicide Victims: 77
Six homicide victims in the past week vs three in the same week of 2022.
This is an 8% decrease over 2022, when we already had 81 homicides by this time last year.
*The 2023 total includes at least 2 negligent, 2 vehicular, and 2 justified. These will NOT be included in the final “murder” total.
Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 137
There have been approximately 191 victims of nonfatal gunshot injuries in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.
At the same time in 2022, there had been 141 shooting incidents and approximately 192 nonfatal shooting victims.
Carjacking Incidents: 56
Carjacking incidents are down 52% relative to 2022 – this is the biggest drop we have seen in any violent crime category since 2022.
It is worth noting that the considerable decrease in carjacking incidents continues to coincide with a large increase (154%) in auto thefts compared with 2022.
Armed Robbery: 143
Reported armed robbery is down 6% relative to 2022.
Fifteen armed robberies reported last week vs. nine during the same week in 2022.
*Armed robbery continues to show a great deal of stability, across both weeks (Weeks 1-13) and years (2019-2023).
In 2022, there were 992 reported auto thefts as of April 16th.
There have been at least 2,493 reported auto thefts to date in 2023, an increase of 154% since 2022.
This is an average of 24 stolen cars per day
