Quite a week – a wild string of carjacking/armed robberies, plus six more homicides, bringing 2022 total to 214*

Homicides are now up 138% since 2019 and 45% since last year

-The sharp increase has now drawn national attention, as we are now outpacing all other major cities in the country in per capita homicides (Source)

The combined total of fatal + nonfatal shooting incidents in 2022 has reached 528

– Of these, 171 have been fatal shootings (32% fatality rate)

Last year, 24% of shooting incidents had resulted in a fatality (120 of 494 total)

Increased firepower, longer response times, and staffing shortages at hospitals are all potential contributing factors to the higher shooting fatality rate in 2022

*Please note: our homicide total includes vehicular/hit & run fatalities, as well as those homicides later deemed justified or negligent

Armed robbery/carjacking incidents this past weekend are alarming

-At 410 YTD armed robberies, we are well above pre-pandemic levels (+28% since 2019, +47% since last year)

Armed robbery is occurring at increased rate in every single NOPD District relative to past years

Many changes on the horizon as the NOPD begins to implement new policy and staffing changes – stay tuned and stay safe!
