As of June 30, 2023, 1st District homicide was up 29% since the same time in 2022.

There was an unusually high number of 1st District homicides in Q1 of 2023, though this number dropped by half in Q2.

2023 First District Trends

 

HOMICIDE (+80% since 2019; +157% since 2020; +80% since 2021; +29% since 2022).
 In contrast to the citywide homicide reduction of 14% vs. 2022, 1st District homicide is up 29% since the same time last year (from 14 as of June 30, 2022 to 18 as of June 30, 2023).
There was an unusually high number of 1st District homicides in Q1 of 2023 (12 from Jan 1 – March 31, 2023), which dropped by half in Q2 (6 homicides from Apr. 1 – June 30, 2023).
NONFATAL SHOOTING INCIDENTS (+155% since 2020; -3% since 2021; -3% since 2022).  
1st District nonfatal shooting incidents increased 155% from 2020-2021 and have remained nearly unchanged.
While there has been a decline of 3% in 1st District shooting incidents in 2023 vs. 2022, this is well below the citywide reduction of 12%.

 

2023 First District Trends

 

CARJACKING (no change since 2019; +13% since 2020; -21% since 2021; -57% since 2022)
ARMED ROBBERY (-7% since 2019; no change since 2020; +27%since 2021; -32% since 2022).  
Carjacking and armed robbery, often crimes of opportunity, remain substantially lower than the same time last year (-57% and -32%, respectively).
In Q2 2023 (April 1-June 30), carjacking incidents in the 1st District declined 88% (eight carjackings in Q1 vs. one in Q2).
Q2 2023 (April 1-June 30), armed robbery incidents in the 1st District declined 60%, from 20 in the first quarter to eight in the second quarter.
