A 15-year-old freshman from McMain high school was gunned down Wednesday afternoon in a car on St. Bernard Ave.

He is at least the 25th juvenile homicide victim of 2022.

Our current YTD homicide total is 265.

This is a 31% increase over the same time period last year and the highest we have seen in the city since 2003.

We have had 668 shooting incidents to date in 2022.

207 (31%) of these have resulted in a fatality, while 461 (69%) were nonfatal.

At this time last year, we’d had a total of 639 shooting incidents.

–166 (26%) had resulted in a fatality and 473 (74%) were nonfatal.

Carjacking incidents now show almost no change (<1%) compared with the same time last year.

–This indicates that the rate of increase has slowed significantly.  Hopefully we will continue to see downward trends as we move into the next year!

Armed robbery shows the greatest rate of increase (+39%) relative to 2021.

A note about homicides

While we cross-check our numbers against coroner records, major offense logs, media reports, and any other source available, homicide numbers are subject to change as investigations progress.  Homicides may be reclassified as “undetermined” if the coroner cannot definitively state whether the injury was self-inflicted, accidental, or intentional.  More commonly, deaths initially listed as “unclassified” are reclassified as “homicide” after autopsy.
