A note about homicides

While we cross-check our numbers against coroner records, major offense logs, media reports, and any other source available, homicide numbers are subject to change as investigations progress.  Homicides may be reclassified as “undetermined” if the coroner cannot definitively state whether the injury was self-inflicted, accidental, or intentional.  More commonly, deaths initially listed as “unclassified” are reclassified as “homicide” after autopsy. 

As of July 16, 2023: 

Homicide Victims: 141

  • Two more women were victims of homicide in the past week – to date, 20 women have been killed in 2023.
  • Homicide in 2023 is 16% lower than the same time in 2022.
  • The homicide total includes six victims of vehicular homicide, one negligent, and approx. three which may ultimately be deemed as justified by the DA’s office. These will not be counted as “murders” by NOPD.

Nonfatal Shooting Incidents: 223

  • There have been approximately 309 victims of nonfatal gunshot incidents in 2023, though this number is subject to change as investigations progress.
  • At the same time in 2022, there had been 255 shooting incidents and approximately 362 nonfatal shooting victims (an overall reduction of 15% in fatal/nonfatal shooting incidents and victims).

Carjacking Incidents: 92

    • Carjacking incidents are down 47% relative to 2022 – still the biggest decline we are seeing in any major violent crime category since 2022.
    • We continue to see a substantial (142%) increase in auto theft (as of July 16, 2022, 1,934 auto thefts vs. 4,265 in 2023).

Armed Robbery Incidents: 235

    • Armed robbery is 24% lower than this time in 2022, though we remain slightly to moderately above 2019-2021 rates (+2%, +22%, and +7%, respectively).
    • There are similar numbers of armed robberies since 2019, except for 2020, when the city was under COVID-19 lockdown.

 

 

In 2022, there were 1,934 reported auto thefts as of July 16th. 

There have been at least 4,265 reported auto thefts to date in 2023, an increase of 121% since 2022. 

This is an average of 22 stolen cars per day
