Things got a little out of hand this weekend, with multiple shooting incidents, including a mass shooting on Bourbon Street Saturday night that injured five people.

As is the case with any large event, some of these incidents involved out-of-town visitors in tourism-centered areas, while others were scattered throughout the city.

Since last week, we have had eight homicides, including an 8-year-old boy struck by an apparent stray bullet on Saturday.

One was allegedly perpetrated by a 15-year-old boy.  We are now at 251 homicides for the year.

Another 13 nonfatal shooting incidents brings us to 432 so far in 2022

At least one of these incidents injured five people, so the actual number of shooting victims this past week was closer to 18.

Armed robbery and carjacking did not see the same spikes this past week as homicide or shootings.

We had nine reported armed robberies, bringing our 2022 total to 503 – a 45% increase compared with last year – this is still the sharpest rate of increase we are seeing across all violent crime categories.

Three new carjacking incidents were reported, bringing our YTD total to 257 – in the same week last year, there were nine reported carjacking incidents.  The rate of increase is slowing, as we are only 4% higher than the same time last year.

*Please note: our homicide total includes vehicular/hit & run fatalities, as well as those homicides later deemed justified or negligent
