Despite its relatively small size (5.5 sq. miles), the Sixth District ranked fourth of eight NOPD Districts in homicide and nonfatal shootings as of June 30, 2023.

2023 Sixth District Trends

 

HOMICIDE (+113% since 2019; +70% since 2020; +113% since 2021; +29% since 2022).
While citywide trends show a 14% decline in homicide, the 6th District remains 13% higher than the same time in 2022.  Most 6th District homicides in 2023 have been in Central City from Rev. John Raphael Way to MLK Blvd and along the Ponchartrain Expy.
There was an alarming number of 6th District homicides in Q1 of 2023 (12 from Jan 1 – March 31, 2023), which dropped by over half in Q2 (5 homicides from Apr. 1 – June 30, 2023).
NONFATAL SHOOTING INCIDENTS (+53% since 2019; +77% since 2020; -23% since 2021; -4% since 2022).
From 2020-2021, 6th District nonfatal shooting incidents showed a large increase (+77%), which have dropped slightly (-4%) in 2022-2023.  Nonfatal shooting incidents in the 6th District remain 53% higher compared with the same time in 2019.
The largest concentration of 6th District shooting incidents through Q2 of 2023 occurred in the Hoffman Triangle and BW Cooper areas, between MLK Blvd and Toledano Streets along S. Claiborne Ave. 

 

2023 Sixth District Trends

 

CARJACKING (+50% since 2019; +80% since 2020; no change since 2021; -57% since 2022).
Carjacking incidents more than doubled from 9 in 2021 to 21 in 2022 before dropping back to 9 again in 2023. 
ARMED ROBBERY (+37% since 2019; +53% since 2020; +8% since 2021; +13% since 2022).  
Armed robbery in the 6th District has remained largely unchanged since 2021.
Notably, there were 19 armed robbery incidents in the 6th District in Q2 of 2023, an increase of 171% since Q1 of 2023 when the 6th District had 7 reported armed robberies.
